HERO works as a catalyst for community development in areas of the Alabama Black Belt to end rural poverty. As a non-profit housing resource center, HERO provides community resources and housing education.

What will I be doing?

Volunteers who work with HERO perform a variety of tasks. Painting, cleaning, framing and roofing are all common assignments for volunteers. If you have a special skill to share, please let us know so a plan can be made to put your skill to use! No construction experience is needed to volunteer with HERO. Where will I stay?

Usually all volunteers stay in our bunkhouse, a two-story living quarters with bunks, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen. HERO asks for a $5 per night donation per guest to cover the cost of utilities and maintenance.

What should I bring?

Volunteers should wear clothes that they don't mind getting dirty and closed toed, hard soled shoes. There are two grocery stores and a handful of restaurants within walking distance from HERO. Much of Greensboro can be covered by foot, but alternate forms of transportation, like a bike or skateboard, is also a great way to get around.
